“No Escape” is a life-sized male figure sculpted from a single solid walnut tree trunk. One ankle is secured with a fabricated stainless steel shackle and chain that extends outward to a fabricated stainless steel globe.
No Escape speaks to the reality that there is no separation between humanity and the world it inhabits. Sculped from a living tree, the figure represents the human body as part of nature rather than apart from it. The stainless steel globe, filled with refuse, reflects the accumulation of pollution and consumption that now defines the planet’s condition.
The shackle and chain are not instruments of punishment imposed from outside. They are self-made restraints, forged through collective behaviour and sustained habits. The figure’s stillness suggests resignation, reflection, and accountability rather than struggle. There is no illusion of leaving the world behind or escaping its damage. We remain physically and ethically bound to what we create.
No Escape is not a warning about a distant future. It is a statement about the present. The work asks viewers to confront the reality that the planet is not something we stand upon or walk away from, but something we are inseparably tethered to, carrying both its beauty and its burden with us.
Size: Globe 28″ (70 cm) in diameter. The figure is life-size, approximately 50″ (125 cm) long and 30″ (75 cm) high.
